Egypt e-receipt system explained

· 6 min read · The CARMA HUB team

Many shop owners hear about the Egypt e-receipt system and don't know whether it applies to them. This is a general explainer: what the e-receipt system is, how it differs from the e-invoice, and how to check whether you are required to join. It is not tax advice; the final word belongs to the Egyptian Tax Authority and your accountant.

What is the e-receipt?

The e-receipt is an Egyptian Tax Authority system for sales to the final consumer, that is, sales from a shop to individuals. The idea is that the data of every sales receipt is sent to the Authority electronically through a system connected to it, instead of the receipt staying only as paper inside the shop.

The stated aim is to give the Authority a clear picture of sales, and to give the consumer a receipt that can be verified.

For a shop owner, this means the sales system itself must be connected to the Authority's system, or use a solution that is connected to it, so every receipt is sent at the time of sale. A printed receipt on its own, however tidy, is not enough if you are required to join.

E-receipt vs e-invoice

  • The e-invoice: for business-to-business dealings, that is, sales from a registered company to another company or body.
  • The e-receipt: for sales to individual consumers, such as everyday sales in a shop.

Your business may be required to use one of them or both, depending on who your customers are and on your tax registration.

An illustration: a shop that sells only to individuals is mainly concerned with the e-receipt. A wholesaler that sells to shops and companies is concerned with the e-invoice. A shop that sells to individuals and sometimes supplies companies may need both. Your accountant is the one who can say exactly where you stand.

Is your shop required to join?

The e-receipt system has been rolled out since 2022 in mandatory phases. In each phase the Authority announces lists of registered taxpayers who must join. So there is no single answer for every shop; whether you are required depends on your registration and on the announced lists.

The easiest way to check is the official inquiry page on the Tax Authority's website: https://www.eta.gov.eg/ar/ereceipt-inquiry

You will usually need your tax registration details to complete the inquiry. If it shows that you are required, note the date that applies to you and don't wait until the last day, because connecting and testing take time.

Check the page itself, and don't rely on forwarded messages or social media posts. If you are unsure, ask your accountant or the tax office your business belongs to.

What to do if you are required

  • Ask your accountant first about the steps for your business and the dates that apply to you.
  • Review what the Authority asks for in registration and data to connect to its system.
  • Ask your sales system provider clearly: does it send receipts to the Authority now? Ask to see it yourself, not a promise for the future.
  • Tidy up your item and price data now, because any connection needs correct data.

And if you are not required yet?

Even if your name is not on the current lists, it helps to have your sales recorded with clear invoices, your stock under control, and your numbers ready to export. That helps you with your accountant today and makes any move the Authority asks for later easier. Check the Authority's official announcements from time to time.

Be careful with offers that promise a system will «sort out your taxes» without explaining how the connection works and with whom. Always ask to see the receipt actually reach the Authority's system, and ask your accountant before you pay.

CARMA HUB and the e-receipt

To say it plainly: CARMA HUB does not currently send e-receipts to the Tax Authority. What it offers today is recording every sale with an invoice, printing 58 or 80 mm thermal receipts and A4 and A5 invoices, and sales and profit reports you can export to Excel or print as PDF for your accountant. If you are required to use the e-receipt, you need a solution connected to the Authority alongside it.
